A First-Timer's Guide to Buying Intimate Products

Shopping for your first intimate product doesn't have to be overwhelming. Here's what to look for, what to avoid, and how to buy discreetly.

Start with one simple question: what sensation are you after?

Most first-time buyers overthink the category. The honest answer is that you don't need to know exactly โ€” but thinking about external vs. internal stimulation is a useful starting point.

External stimulation (clitoral vibrators, suction toys) sits against the body rather than inside it. Most people who prefer clitoral sensation find these easier to use and more reliable for orgasm. The LELO SONA 2 and similar suction-style toys are among our most-recommended first products.

Internal stimulation (G-spot vibrators, wearables) is inserted. These work well as solo toys and especially shine for couples or long-distance partners โ€” see the Lovense Lush 4.

If you're genuinely unsure, start external. It's lower-stakes.

Material safety: the thing most guides skip

This is the most important section in this guide.

A large share of intimate products sold on Shopee, Lazada, and Amazon are made from porous materials โ€” most commonly TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) or TPR. These materials feel soft and are often marketed as "body-safe silicone," but they are not the same thing.

Porous materials:

  • Cannot be fully sterilized (bacteria live in the pores)
  • May contain phthalates, a class of chemicals linked to hormone disruption
  • Degrade over time, sometimes releasing chemical odors

Body-safe materials are non-porous and verifiable:

  • Medical-grade silicone โ€” firm but flexible, warm to the touch, easy to clean
  • ABS plastic โ€” hard, smooth, often used for vibrator casings and controls
  • Borosilicate glass โ€” completely non-porous, temperature-play compatible, easy to sanitize
  • Stainless steel โ€” the same grade used in cookware; completely non-porous

How to verify: buy from the manufacturer's official website or an authorized retailer. That's the simplest way to avoid counterfeits and mislabeled products.

Noise level matters more than you think

If you live with family or roommates โ€” as most people in Singapore, Hong Kong, and across urban Asia do โ€” noise is a practical constraint, not a luxury concern.

Good motors run at 40โ€“50 dB or less (library-level quiet). The worst cheap toys can reach 70 dB (conversational noise). This is a real difference.

We rate every product's noise level based on manufacturer specs and user reports. If a product is labeled Whisper Quiet, you can use it in a shared apartment without worry.

Buying discreetly

Packaging: All retailers we link to ship in plain, unmarked boxes. The return address is typically the retailer's logistics arm (e.g., "LH Distribution" for Lovehoney), with no brand names on the exterior.

Payment: Most major intimate retailers accept PayPal and credit cards. The transaction typically appears on your statement as the retailer's legal business name โ€” again, nothing obvious.

Delivery: If you're concerned about household members intercepting parcels, consider delivery to a locker service or your workplace. Singapore and Hong Kong both have extensive parcel locker networks.

Our three beginner picks

1. Lovehoney Desire Luxury Bullet (~$40) โ€” Best for: anyone who wants body-safe without a big investment. Small, discreet, body-safe materials, 20 vibration patterns.

2. LELO SONA 2 Cruise (~$119) โ€” Best for: first-timers who want the best experience from day one. Sonic suction technology, whisper quiet, 12 modes.

3. Lovense Lush 4 (~$99) โ€” Best for: long-distance couples or anyone who wants app control. 5-hour battery, globally-controlled.
